As thousands of delegates, politicians, supporters and protesters prepare to descend upon Denver for the Democratic National Convention, one thing they normally take for granted like a ride around town, may be in short supply due to a lack of limousines.
Normally the supply of limos is not a problem in Denver, but with so many people expected to be requiring the services of a hire limo, the demand is predicted to out reach the supply. While there are some 271 limo companies that are registered at DIA, the majority of these companies only have one to three cars; this at a time when limo companies are expected to make 125 runs a day during the DNC compared to 80 during a normal week.
Some people are anticipating a shortage and are pre-booking their limos; many of the available limos in the area are already reserved for 12 to 24 hours a day by a particular person or group of people to get around town during the four-day convention.
To help with the shortage, limo companies are renting cars from other companies and turning to other states to help bring in more cars and the Public Utilities Commission has issued a waiver system to allow companies to add to their current fleet.
The DNC is expected to be good for the local limo companies. It is estimated that it will pump an additional half million dollars into the local limo industry, notwithstanding the fact that some people, attending the DNC from other states, are expected to also bring their own cars and drivers.
