Limo Plans By Delegates

For over a decade the Maryland Limousine Association has been serving the Chauffeured Transportation Industry in Maryland, by working with legislation and legislators on issues that could adversely affect operators; establishing education and bulk buying programs, and offering new operators a place to turn to for information pertaining to a limousine company's day to day operation.

In reviewing his General Assembly achievements for 2008, Democrat Steven DeBoy, a retired Baltimore County police office, cited a delegates’ bill, aimed at regulating limousine services that The Maryland Limousine Association asked him to withdraw after the state Public Service Commission showed interest in negotiating some regulations.

According to Deboy "A lot of these fly-by-night limousine services are not carrying the proper insurance."  While he was happy with the notion of correcting something without having to pass a law, and considered this a win, he added that if the commission failed to satisfy association concerns, he would re-introduce the bill next year.

Another delegate’s bill potentially affecting limousine safety was introduced by James Malone. Malone, also a Democrat, said he regretted the outcome of his effort to deny driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. If passed, his bill would have prohibited the Motor Vehicle Administration from granting an identification card, moped operator's permit or driver's license to non-U.S. citizens unless they had lawful residence. Malone withdrew the bill in March.

In the UK the government is tightening controls on stretch limousines to make sure they meet safety and licensing standards. While the popularity of stretched limousines has soared in Britain the government is determined to ensure that that these vehicles meet the required construction standards and are properly licensed and registered. Chauffers need to be properly licensed and trained.

Limousine hire safety is an important public issue and is on the agenda everywhere, not just in the US.  While Governments are sometimes slow to act and regulate limousine services, limousine associations are becoming increasingly self regulatory, with members being bound to a code of practice and conduct.  So, next time you hire a limo, relax, limos are getting safer!
